Hamsters not included! I was very disappointed to find no hamsters at Tuesday nights homegroup. However we did have an excellent worship time, which I think I needed more than any small furry rodents!

We were looking at the ‘Engel’s’ scale and how it relates to PIP’s. These are grand sounding titles for very practical things.

A PIP is a Person In Progress, one of our friends/workers/relatives who aren’t (yet) a Christian. What makes it work is praying for our PIP while taking the opportunities to talk to them about our faith. It’s not a short term relationship, but one based on genuine friendship where we can be natural with our PIP i.e. showing them faith by actions not words.

The Engel’s scale is a simple scale that allows us to place where our PIP’s are on the way to becoming a Christian. It runs from -10 through zero to +10, and I’ve put a modified version of it below for those who missed out.

+10 Effective sharing of faith and life
+9 Openness to others
+8 Prayer
+7 Stewardship of resources
+6 Christian Life-styles
+5 Discovery and use of gifts
+4 Growth in Christian Character
+3 Become part of the process of making other disciples
+2 Initiation into the Church
+1 Evaluation of the decision
0 A NEW DISCIPLE IS BORN
-1 Repentance
-2 Challenge and decision to act
-3 Awareness of personal need
-4 Grasp of the implications of the gospel
-5 Positive attitude to the gospel
-6 Awareness of the basic facts of the gospel
-7 Interest in Christianity
-8 Initial awareness of Christianity
-9 No effective knowledge of Christianity
-10 Awareness of the supernatural

Try it out: most people we tried it on were higher up the scale than we thought. Just remember a person can go from -10 to +10 overnight, but only by what God does, not us!
